Headphones
There are many different headphones types.
Closed headphones which are meant to shield the listener from external noise. These also protect other people (particularly on public transport) from hearing what you are hearing. Sound reflection within the closed headphones can sometimes affect the quality of the audio.
The sony MDR v6 are closed circumaural headphones.
Open Headphones have no restrictions and probably the best but you can hear some external sounds ....again a matter of taste. Open headphones tend to have grills. This allows sound in and out so you can hear what is happening if you are not playing audio too loudly.
The Sennheiser HD650 are open Circumaural headphones
Supra-aural sit directly on the ear but does not completely cover over the ear.
Many of Grado's headphones are supra-aural.
